Learn how to treat Damp Wall

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

What is Wall Dampness ? In common terms the deposition of white salt on the wall and white patches form in the wall, flakes peal of from the wall are the common signs of dampness. This destroys the aesthetic of our house.

Efflorescence is the term used to describe the mineral white salt that appears on the masonry, concrete, brick that have layered from within the surface, when moisture migrates through it.

Efflorescence occurs as moisture enters and moves through the layers it dissolves salt that are present in cement and coarse When the mineral salt finds it way to the surface, the water evaporates leaving behind the crystalline salt.

The common mistake done to resolve the problem is repainting. Proper treatment should be done before painting. Even after painting there will be white outline on the damp area. Most likely the efflorescence will resurface again .

Efflorescence may occurs within a the first year of a new construction project may be only an aesthetic concern. This efflorescence occur due to the residual moisture within the layers. This will cease naturally as the masonry dries and cures.

However if the efflorescence continue then it is likely that moisture ingress from external sources is occurring. Which can lead to a on going problem.

Efflorescence will stop forming when the migration of the moisture through the layers is stopped. The source of the water ingress should be traced and eliminated. If the source of water is not stopped it is likely that the efflorescence will surface again.

Treatment for Damp Wall

Damp Wall Treatment

In case of mild efflorescence following Steps to followed :

1. Brush the affected area with hard bristle brush to remove the salt particles.

2. Clean the dust particles with a clean cloth or a brush.

3. Take a bucket of potable water and add white vinegar(also known acetic acid) 5% to the volume of water.

4. Apply the solution to the affected area with a damp cloth or a piece of sponge.

5. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Apply second coat after the first coat is dry.

6. Keep the damp area properly ventilated.

In Severe cases all the above mentioned steps need to be followed but coating with a stronger solution of calcium chloride 1 part to 3 part of water in two coat. The second coat to applied only after the first coat have dried thoroughly. In this type of treatment professional help should be taken.

How ever having said so we should keep in mind that the above mentioned solution will not work if the moisture ingress is from external source ie cracks, leakage, plumbing work etc. To stop this a proper waterproofing system need to be applied after inspection of the problem and tracing the source of the moisture by a professional waterproofing contractor.

I would like to discuss a bit about another problem which is called raising dampness. This kind of dampness is first visible in the internal wall starting from the ground level and continues raising upward. This type of problem generally occurs in the ground floor and area where the water bed is high. If you would like to know more about the problem and the solution to the problem. Please comment in the comment section. We will then cover the issue.

Finally I would request you to share the blog and help the people going though this problem, also give us love if you like and find the blog informative.
